In my latest creation, I was able to combine two of my favorite things from the 90’s – the Lamborghini Diablo and the movie “Total Recall.” When choosing the car for the design, nothing seemed more appropriate than the Diablo, and the only thing cooler than a Lamborghini is a Lamborghini with Arnold Schwarzenegger on the hood. Using the grid technique and the poster art as a reference, I began what would turn out to be my most challenging design to date."/>

Using the grid technique and the poster art as a reference, I began what would turn out to be my most challenging design to date.
I began by creating the title font, which consists of about 40 layers and appears on every side of the car. Next, I went to work on the pyramid image, which would appear on the sides of the car, using the grid reference to be sure everything was in place. Once the sides were done, it was time to move on to the most difficult element of the design – the hood image.
Recreating a realistic human face, especially one so recognizable, was a task I was not sure I could pull off, but the grid technique did not let me down. I started by laying down the basic outline of the eye, then adding in more detail along with shadows and highlights. The process was the same for the mouth and nose as well. Consisting of hundreds of overlapping shapes, the face took about 6 hours of trial and error to complete.
The “Total Recall” Diablo has not yet been released on the auction house, so it remains to be seen whether or not it will be a hit with buyers, but I am satisfied to have completed a challenge that seemed far beyond what I thought I could accomplish when I first began painting.
